Strengthening Ties with Lebanon’s Security Institutions
The United Kingdom has recently formalised its commitment to Lebanon by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities as well as the Ministry of Defence. This agreement underscores the enduring partnership between the UK and Lebanon’s security institutions, aiming to enhance security and stability within the region.
Investment in Security Assistance
Through the UK’s Integrated Security Fund, the partnership will facilitate a 31-month Internal Security Assistance Programme dedicated to the Internal Security Forces (ISF) and the Lebanese Army, amounting to an impressive £16.3 million. This financial support is designed to bolster Lebanon’s internal security framework, enabling these institutions to effectively respond to both existing and emerging challenges.
Addressing Security Challenges
The collaboration between the UK and Lebanon’s security forces will play a pivotal role in reinforcing state authority, promoting institutional resilience, and fostering a secure environment. The initiative aims to enhance the professional capabilities of the ISF and the Lebanese Army, equipping them to tackle a variety of security threats, including counter-terrorism efforts and the prevention of criminal violence.

British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, articulated the UK’s dedication to supporting Lebanon’s security institutions. He remarked on the significance of the Memorandum of Understanding, reflecting a mutual commitment to fostering a more secure, stable, and resilient Lebanon. The support for professional state institutions like the Lebanese Army and ISF is crucial in ensuring the safety and protection of the Lebanese populace.
