Support for Sustainable Farming in Choluteca
During a recent visit to the municipality of Choluteca, British Ambassador to Honduras, Juliana Correa, engaged with local farming families who are benefitting from an impactful agricultural programme. This initiative focuses on enhancing productivity, resilience, and reducing emissions in livestock systems through strategic investment, technical guidance, and innovative practices.
The visit marked a significant milestone, as 11 farming families received the inaugural loans facilitated by the project in the region. This crucial funding is earmarked for investments in low-carbon technologies, improved farm management practices, and measures to adapt to the changing climate.
International Backing for Local Initiatives
The project is supported by the MAF, an international climate finance programme endorsed by the UK and various partners. Its primary goal in Honduras is to enhance access to finance and technical support for livestock producers while advocating for sustainable agricultural practices that contribute to long-term environmental health.
Ambassador Correa’s itinerary included a visit to Finca La Bendición, where she observed the practical application of sustainable farming techniques. These approaches not only bolster productivity but also enhance resilience against climate change and promote the responsible management of natural resources.

Reflecting on the visit, Ambassador Correa expressed her pride in the UK’s support for initiatives that transform climate action into tangible benefits for farming families. She highlighted that the integration of green finance, technical assistance, and innovative strategies is pivotal in helping producers enhance their livelihoods while fostering a sustainable future.
The implementation of this project is a collaborative effort involving CATIE, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), the Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment (SERNA), financial institutions, and local organisations. This partnership aims to create a robust support system for farmers, ensuring that they can thrive in an environmentally responsible manner.
