The scheme, which has facilitated savings in excess of millions of pounds, has been particularly beneficial for families. It includes a reduction in VAT on children’s meals in restaurants and tickets to various attractions from 20% to 5%. Additionally, children aged five to fifteen can enjoy free bus travel across England. Leading holiday park operator Haven has reported a significant return of £4 million to holidaymakers as a direct result of participating in this initiative.

Numerous businesses have joined the savings initiative, passing on benefits to families. Locations such as Barleylands Farm Park in Essex, Playdale Farm Park in Scarborough, and Alexandra Palace have offered savings on various activities, including family dining and pedal boat rentals. Adventure Attractions, the operator of Bournemouth Pier, has removed its historic Pier Toll and provided further discounts on attractions.

Simon Palethorpe, CEO of Haven, remarked on the success of the initiative, stating it has contributed to countless happy moments for families this summer. More than half a million children have benefitted from activity vouchers, encouraging families to create lasting memories by the sea.
The initiative has also seen significant participation from entertainment giants. ODEON reported that over 1.2 million guests have taken advantage of discounted cinema outings. Greene King, another contributor, has sold more than 1.1 million children’s meals and recorded over 80,000 entries to its Wacky Warehouse soft play venues, resulting in substantial savings for customers.
Merlin, known for attractions such as Alton Towers and the London Eye, welcomed nearly 5 million visitors to its venues since the VAT reduction began, further enhancing family days out.
Future Support for Families
The government has announced ongoing support measures for families in the coming months, including a £2 cap on bus fares set to be implemented by 2027 and the removal of VAT from electricity bills. Additionally, a planned reduction of 20% in business rates for pubs and social clubs aims to bolster the hospitality sector, benefiting from the increased patronage driven by the Great British Summer Savings initiative.
