New Export Opportunities for British Businesses
British companies are set to benefit from enhanced export opportunities, fostering job creation and economic growth within local communities, as outlined in the recent announcement by the Chancellor.
A pioneering product from UK Export Finance (UKEF), known as Flexible Finance, is designed to enable select buyers in rapidly developing markets such as Brazil, Morocco, and Mexico to access loans under more adaptable terms. This initiative aims to stimulate demand for British goods and services.
Unlike UKEF’s previous guarantees, this innovative product will provide borrowers with increased flexibility in the utilisation of funds, encouraging overseas buyers to collaborate with UK suppliers by leveraging UKEF support. In addition, UKEF will actively engage UK suppliers through matchmaking services and procurement assistance.
Financial Support and Strategic Partnerships
Under this pilot scheme, UKEF guarantees will amount to a total of up to £5 billion, covering as much as 80% of a commercial loan for selected international buyers. This initiative not only broadens access to finance for foreign borrowers but also establishes a collaborative relationship with UKEF, facilitating the growth of imports of British goods and services.
This initiative aligns with the Chancellor’s commitment to ‘Backing Britain’ through strategic procurement and job creation, aiming to stimulate growth across all regions and restore optimism in local communities.
John Healey MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, commented, “We’re supporting British businesses in securing more international deals, particularly in fast-growing countries where our presence is currently limited. This fresh approach is a key element of my forthcoming address in Liverpool, where I will emphasise our commitment to British industry and innovation, ultimately leading to the creation of new markets abroad and additional employment opportunities at home.”
Building a Foundation for Growth
Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, stated, “We have faith in Britain’s capacity to engage in global trade, embracing the potential of emerging markets. Through Flexible Finance, we are not only encouraging foreign nations to purchase British products but also laying the groundwork for sustainable growth and job creation within the UK as our businesses reap the benefits of a robust export market.”
This initiative represents the latest enhancement to UKEF’s offerings, responding to the Industrial Strategy and following the introduction of a new defence export facility in June, which has expanded UKEF’s capability to support defence exports by an impressive £50 billion.
