Investigation into Large-Scale Waste Dumping in Nelson
Authorities are currently probing the illegal disposal of approximately 75 tonnes of mixed commercial and household waste at a mill in Nelson. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding environmental safety and local wellbeing.
The Environment Agency is keen to identify a male suspect described as white, around 5 feet 9 inches in height, of a robust build, and sporting red hair. Surveillance footage has captured him with a beard, providing a clearer image for potential witnesses.
It is suspected that the waste dumping was a calculated act, as evidence indicates that five separate deposits were made within a single afternoon and into the evening. The perpetrator employed a vehicle displaying cloned registration plates, a method often used to evade law enforcement and detection.
Investigators have made substantial progress in their inquiries and have already interviewed an individual who may have relevant information about the case.
Community Impact and Urgent Appeal
John Neville, the Area Environment Manager for the Environment Agency, commented on the gravity of the situation. He stated, “This was a deliberate dumping of waste, and we believe it was planned using cloned number plates to help evade detection.” The repercussions of this act extend beyond environmental concerns, as the landowner now faces significant clean-up expenses.
The mill, located in a residential area adjacent to a canal, poses additional issues for local residents who must contend with the unsightly presence of the waste. This ongoing situation has prompted a strong appeal for public assistance. “We urge anyone who recognises the man in the images to come forward with information,” Neville added.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 15 February 2026, between 2 PM and 6 PM, and has resulted in clean-up costs for the landowner that could reach into the thousands of pounds. The removal and proper disposal of the waste at a legitimate facility are now essential to mitigate any further environmental impact.
