New Funding System for Learners in England
Students in England now have the opportunity to apply for financial support through the newly implemented Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE). This innovative system has been launched to streamline the funding process for learners, making it easier for them to access the necessary resources to pursue their education.
The Student Loans Company (SLC) has announced that individuals intending to commence courses between 1 January and 31 August 2027 can begin their applications for the LLE. This funding initiative replaces the previous undergraduate financial support system offered by Student Finance England (SFE), extending its reach to include certain postgraduate qualifications, notably in healthcare and education. Moreover, the LLE will also cover some courses that were previously financed through the Advanced Learner Loan (ALL) scheme.
This significant overhaul of the student funding landscape in England aims to establish a unified and adaptable financial support mechanism, allowing learners to balance their academic pursuits with work and family commitments.
Application Process for the Lifelong Learning Entitlement
To apply for the LLE, applicants must possess a GOV.UK One Login account. If you do not have an account, you can easily create one. The application process will guide you through signing in or setting up a new account, and you will be informed if identity verification is required at that point.
Available Funding Options for Students
Eligible students can access a variety of financial support options, including:
- Tuition Fee Loans to assist with course tuition costs
- Maintenance Loans to help cover living expenses
- Additional support such as grants or allowances for those with low income, disabilities, or dependents
The level of financial assistance available is contingent upon the number of credits associated with the selected courses. For instance, a full-time academic year for a bachelor’s degree typically equates to 120 credits. New students who have not previously received student finance can enjoy a standard entitlement for Tuition Fee Loans up to £39,160, which corresponds to approximately 480 credits. Depending on the course specifics and provider charges, it may be possible to fund more than 480 credits.
For those who have previously studied and received financial support, this history will influence the amount of tuition funding available under the LLE.
Understanding Maintenance Loans and Additional Support
Maintenance Loans can be granted up to a maximum of £15,415 per academic year, with the amount varying based on factors such as household income, residential location during study, and the number of credits undertaken. The financial support received through Maintenance Loans may differ from year to year based on these considerations.
Additionally, students may be eligible for further financial assistance from various sources, including:
- Bursaries, scholarships, or hardship funds from universities or colleges
- NHS funding or bursaries for specific courses like nursing or social work
Repayment Structure and Further Information
Loan repayments commence only after the completion of a course or module, adhering to the earning thresholds outlined in Repayment Plan 5. It is important to note that interest is applied from the moment the first loan payment is issued. Any outstanding loans under the LLE will be cancelled 40 years after the April in which repayment obligations first begin.
