Overview of the Sea Link Project
The Sea Link Project entails the establishment of a new converter station located within a 5-kilometre radius of the proposed Friston substation. This facility will be linked to the substation through High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) underground cables, ensuring efficient electricity transmission.
Application Submission and Examination Process
The application for the project was lodged with the Planning Inspectorate by National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) Plc on 27 March 2025. It was subsequently accepted for examination on 23 April 2025. This examination process allowed for thorough scrutiny, enabling public participation, as well as input from statutory consultees and other interested parties.
Community Engagement and Involvement
Throughout the six-month examination, local communities were actively encouraged to engage in discussions regarding the project, particularly regarding its potential impact on their surroundings. Residents, local authorities, and various stakeholders had the chance to present their views and evidence to the Examining Authority, fostering a collaborative atmosphere during the review.
Recommendations and Decision-Making
After careful consideration of all local perspectives and the evidence presented, the Examining Authority provided its recommendations to the Secretary of State on 30 July 2026. This marks the 118th energy application examined out of a total of 186 to date, all completed by the Planning Inspectorate within the statutory timeframe established by the Planning Act 2008.
Public Access to Information
The decision, alongside the recommendations made by the Examining Authority to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, and the evidence considered during the examination, is accessible to the public on the National Infrastructure Planning website. This transparency ensures that all stakeholders can review the findings and the basis for the final decision.
