UK Supports Somalia’s Journey Towards Enhanced Security and Political Advancement

Strengthening Bilateral Ties with Somalia

The United Kingdom has reiterated its steadfast commitment to Somalia with the recent visit of Kirsty McNeill MP, the Minister for Development and Africa. This marks a significant moment as it is her inaugural trip to the country, underscoring the UK’s ongoing support for Somalia’s development and stability.

During her discussions with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the minister focused on the political and security landscape of Somalia. The conversations highlighted the urgent need for a credible transition towards a security framework led by Somalis themselves. The minister emphasised the importance of constructive dialogue among Somali leaders to foster national unity, facilitate political progress, and build consensus on the nation’s future. She pointed out that advancements in political dialogue and security transitions are essential for maintaining international confidence and support.

Commitment to Humanitarian Support

During her visit, Minister McNeill reaffirmed the UK’s role as a dedicated partner to Somalia, collaborating with local leaders and communities to cultivate a more stable, secure, and prosperous future for the Somali populace. A significant part of the discussions also revolved around the pressing humanitarian challenges facing the nation, with an emphasis on enhancing resilience to future crises. Last year, UK initiatives reached over 950,000 individuals, providing crucial humanitarian aid and support for climate resilience.

While touring a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse in Mogadishu, the minister witnessed first-hand the impact of UK support on those grappling with drought and food insecurity. She learned about collaborative efforts with the Federal Government of Somalia, the United Nations, and civil society to strengthen supportive systems, deliver life-saving assistance, and empower communities, particularly focusing on women and girls.

Collaboration with International Partners

In addition to her meetings with Somali leadership, Minister McNeill engaged with representatives from the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) and the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). She acknowledged the dedication and sacrifices made by Somali security forces and African Union troops in their pursuit of security objectives within the country.

The UK is poised to offer additional support to Somali forces through UNSOS, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the security advancements achieved against al-Shabaab. The progress of political dialogue among Somali leaders and the development of plans for the security transition will be pivotal in securing future assistance.

Essential Support for Security Operations

The UK’s ongoing contributions to UNSOS provide vital non-lethal assistance, which includes food rations, medical supplies, tents, and casualty evacuation services. This support is instrumental in ensuring that the Somali security forces can continue their efforts to secure peace and stability in the region.

In conclusion, the UK remains a committed ally to Somalia, actively working alongside the Federal Government, the African Union, the United Nations, civil society, and various partners to foster a secure and prosperous future for the Somali people.
