Calls for Regulation Intensify
As demands for the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) grow stronger, the team of former US President Donald Trump has made it clear that if laboratory leaders wish to slow down the sector, they will need to take the initiative themselves. The CEO of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, urged the US government to impose regulations on AI companies as part of a broader effort to decelerate the pace of technological advancement in a recent article. This appeal garnered unexpected support from notable figures such as Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Elon Musk. The week was marked by vigorous discussions concerning the potential threats AI poses to human security, with Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, also advocating for a more measured approach to development.
The calls for a slowdown in AI progress have intensified following expressions of significant concern from several researchers regarding the rapid pace of technological advancements. Rishub Jain, a former DeepMind researcher, remarked, “The pace of AI is accelerating. And as AI becomes more capable, it poses greater risks.”
Debate Over Responsibility and Altruism
In a contrasting perspective, David Sacks, co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, voiced his thoughts on X, stating, “If unpublished models are alarming enough for you to believe a slowdown is necessary, I support your responsible actions. But stop pretending you need someone’s permission. Stop pretending that antitrust legislation must be suspended to form a cartel… And most importantly, stop pretending that the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic.”
Amodei has also called for the government to enable competing AI firms to collaborate on establishing regulations without breaching antitrust laws, suggesting that companies should either participate in discussions or receive exemptions. He even advocated for international coordination, including engagement with the Chinese Communist Party, although critics questioned the feasibility of such collaboration. Sacks pointed out, “It is highly unlikely that China will join a global agreement, as you are all aware.”
The Challenge of Global Competition
The fear that the United States may lose its technological edge to China has largely influenced the government’s resistance to slowing down AI development. Trump commented during a visit to Ireland that “There are many negative forces pushing this when they shouldn’t be, talking about things that won’t happen.” He further stated, “We are outpacing China in AI,” adding, “and frankly, I want that to continue because whoever wins in AI, wins.”
According to reports, Trump claimed on Monday that he himself is a sufficient safeguard against uncontrolled AI, alleging that attempts to limit this technology are part of a “sick conspiracy.” The US views China’s AI ecosystem as a threat to its economy and national security, with concerns that it has already been eclipsed by the technological advancements of the Asian nation. Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House, expressed to CNN on Sunday, “If Congress rushes and holds an emergency session to attempt to regulate AI, we will lose the race against China, which poses a threat to all Americans. Therefore, we must maintain balance. We must have a firm hand at the helm.”
Companies Taking Voluntary Steps
In the interim, companies are pledging to take voluntary measures to restore public confidence in their responsible practices. On Sunday evening, Altman supported Amodei’s proposal to grant external evaluators employee-level access to their firms, allowing for verification of safety practices and reporting of incidents. While these initiatives may incur significant costs, Altman wrote on X, “The pace of development will be worthwhile; no US competitive pressure justifies recklessness.”
