Barnsley Residents Offered Hands-On AI Training for Career Development and Job Opportunities

Innovative AI Initiatives Set to Transform Careers in Barnsley

Two groundbreaking initiatives are set to launch in Barnsley, aimed at empowering residents to harness artificial intelligence (AI) in straightforward, practical ways. These programmes will assist individuals in job applications and interview preparation, as well as provide training for positions increasingly integrated with digital and AI tools. The AI Career Launchpad will offer flexible training opportunities and paid work placements with local employers, while the Getting Job Ready with AI pilot will focus on supporting those actively seeking employment.

This announcement comes six months after Barnsley was recognised as the UK’s first Tech Town, illustrating the potential of AI to generate new job opportunities, enhance local services, and foster economic development across the region.

Tailored Support for Job Seekers

The newly established schemes are designed to provide practical assistance to Barnsley residents and job seekers, enabling them to effectively utilise AI in their pursuit of employment, boost their confidence, and prepare for future careers. One initiative will concentrate on training individuals for roles specifically related to AI, while the other will aid job seekers in leveraging AI tools during their job search—assisting them in identifying suitable positions, refining CVs and cover letters, practising interview techniques, and comprehending the digital tools presently employed in many workplaces.

The AI Career Launchpad, a collaborative effort with Barnsley College valued at over £400,000, will present accessible training pathways for individuals of all ages aspiring to enter AI-related roles. Participants will engage in six months of training linked to a Level 4 apprenticeship, alongside paid placements that will allow them to acquire hands-on experience during their learning phase.

Engaging Local Businesses and Communities

Local businesses that participate in this initiative will gain early access to a skilled workforce trained in AI, with government-funded placements facilitating the infusion of contemporary skills into their teams. This programme will also enable companies to explore how AI can enhance efficiency, streamline administrative tasks, and improve service delivery, ultimately supporting their growth.

Furthermore, upon completion of the programme, the curriculum will be made widely available at no cost, allowing colleges and training providers across the country to adopt the Barnsley model, thus extending its reach to various communities nationwide.

Hands-On Support for Job Seekers

Beginning in September, job seekers in Barnsley will receive practical assistance through the Getting Job Ready with AI pilot. This initiative targets individuals who are already adept with technology in their daily lives but seek greater confidence in using AI and digital tools during their job search or workplace preparation. The tailored support will encompass utilising AI for job searches, customising CVs and cover letters, interview preparation, and understanding how employers integrate digital tools into their operations.

Referral to this course will occur through Jobcentre Plus, marking a significant effort by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to enhance employment opportunities and support career progression. This includes reforming job centres into comprehensive services that cater to job seekers and expanding the support provided by work coaches.

A Government Commitment to Job Creation

The Minister for Employment, Andrew Western, emphasised the government’s commitment to facilitating better job opportunities across the UK. He remarked that the initiatives in Barnsley are a testament to the potential of AI to assist job seekers in gaining the necessary confidence and skills to compete effectively in the labour market.

AI Minister Kanishka Narayan added that the transformation of the workplace through AI necessitates that working individuals reap the benefits of these changes. The government’s objective is to ensure that people understand the practical applications of AI in their daily lives, whether it be in job searching, skill development, or career advancement.

Community and Educational Engagement

Matt O’Neill, the Executive Director for Place at Barnsley Council, expressed pride in the town’s pioneering status as the UK’s first Tech Town, noting that these schemes are crucial in ensuring that locals can access the opportunities presented by AI and digital technologies. The focus remains on providing tangible support that positively impacts residents, from building confidence for job applications to equipping businesses with the talent necessary for growth.

In addition, Barnsley College is committed to nurturing staff capabilities in AI, fostering a responsible approach to its implementation in educational settings. Matthew Sowerby, a Tutorial Team Leader, shared his positive experience with a dedicated AI course that has transformed his approach to teaching and planning, making AI a valuable tool in the educational landscape.

Future Developments and Broader Impact

Alongside the launch of these new initiatives, an upcoming assessment will explore how local charities, community groups, and social enterprises are currently utilising AI, identifying areas where additional support could maximize impact. This collaborative effort, led by Adobe and Barnsley CVS, aims to shape future training opportunities and provide a platform for organisations to discover available resources.

The schemes are part of Barnsley’s ongoing Tech Town partnership, involving collaboration between government, industry, and local organisations, supported by leading companies such as Cisco, Microsoft, Google, and Adobe. Insights garnered from Barnsley’s initiatives will inform similar strategies nationwide, as the government aims to equip 10 million workers in the UK with AI skills by 2030, ensuring that every young individual has access to clear pathways into skilled employment.
