During the study period, 2,215 participants (32%) sought treatment at least once for a migraine. Furthermore, researchers found that 47% of participants purchased triptans—prescription medications designed to provide rapid relief from migraine symptoms—at some point, with the majority consuming at least two tablets monthly.

The findings revealed a correlation between three weather-related factors and migraines: air pollution, temperature (including exposure to UV rays), and humidity. Notably, higher levels of air pollution were linked to an increase in hospital visits due to migraines. Conversely, days marked by fewer hospital visits recorded lower-than-average pollution levels. Individuals exposed to elevated levels of nitrogen dioxide were 41% more likely to seek medical help for migraines compared to those who were not exposed to high levels of this gas.

Moreover, the study indicated that individuals exposed to intense UV radiation on specific days had a 23% higher likelihood of consulting a healthcare professional for migraine symptoms. Researchers concluded that “high temperatures and low humidity appear to correlate with an increase in migraines, likely due to their amplifying effect on nitrogen dioxide levels.” Given the growing frequency of heatwaves and pollution linked to climate change, it is vital to consider these migraine risk factors.

Understanding the Triggers

It is essential to emphasise that the study did not establish a direct causal link between air pollution, heat, and low humidity with migraines; rather, it identified a relationship between these factors. However, medical experts suggest that there is merit to these observations.

Air pollution may incite neuroinflammation, the immune system’s inflammatory response within the brain and spinal cord, which is a known risk factor for migraines, explains Sana Ghafoor, a neurologist at Tufts Medical Center. This inflammation can lead to the release of pain-related chemicals, such as calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P, both of which can trigger a migraine.

Additionally, air pollution can pose particular challenges for those with allergies who also suffer from migraines, according to Clifford Segil, a doctor of osteopathy and neurologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. The body may interpret air pollution as an allergen, prompting an immune response that could induce a migraine in sensitive individuals.

Heat and Humidity as Catalysts

Heat impacts blood vessels and nerves; as Segil explains, “When individuals experience heat, the nerves and blood vessels in constricted areas can become irritated, as the diameter of these vessels or nerves increases.” This irritation can also lead to migraines. Furthermore, the risk of dehydration rises in hot weather, with Ghafoor noting, “If you’re overheated and dehydrated, that can also trigger migraines.”

Segil points out that high humidity, common in spring and summer, can similarly provoke migraines. Increased humidity leads to perspiration and water loss, which can reduce blood volume in the vessels: “This decreases the diameter of the blood vessels and can lead to headaches, much like how an increase in vessel diameter can.” Ghafoor often observes a rise in migraine patients during periods of high humidity: “Even minor changes in atmospheric pressure can activate nerve endings and sinus cavities, resulting in the release of pain-inducing chemicals.”

Aside from the three main factors, several other common migraine triggers have been identified by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, including:

When pollution levels are high in your area, Segil advises wearing a mask, such as an N95, when outdoors. Keeping windows closed and utilising an air purifier can also help reduce indoor pollution. Additionally, tracking pollution levels throughout the day can assist in determining the best times to stay indoors.
