Empowering the Coalsnaughton Community in Clackmannanshire: Join Us in Making a Difference

Evacuations Prompted by Ground Movement in Clackmannanshire

In May, nearly one hundred homes in Coalsnaughton, Clackmannanshire, were evacuated due to ground movement associated with historical coal mining activities. The situation has raised significant concerns among residents, prompting the Mining Remediation Authority to take action.

On Thursday, 27 August, the authority convened meetings with affected residents to provide updates regarding ongoing investigations and outline anticipated operational activities. The Chief Operations Director, Carl Banton, addressed the community, highlighting the findings of their assessment programme.

Comprehensive Assessments Reveal Severity of Damage

Banton stated, “We have completed a programme of assessment work, including structural engineering evaluations, ground investigations, and an appraisal of options to ensure the area’s safety. This has allowed us to ascertain the extent of damage and determine the likely next steps for each affected area and property.”

The assessments indicated that various streets have been impacted by ground movement and property damage to varying degrees. Notably, the most severe effects have been observed on Benbuck View and Dunmoss View, where properties have been deemed too damaged to rehabilitate. The authority’s proposed course of action, pending necessary approvals, includes the acquisition and demolition of homes on these streets.

Support for Residents Amid Difficult Decisions

Authorities recognise the emotional toll this news has on residents and their families. Banton remarked, “This conclusion has not been reached lightly. It reflects the significant level of damage and the extensive work required to secure the ground, while emphasising the need to provide a clear and safe path forward for those affected.”

In other areas affected by ground movement, such as Langour, the situation is more optimistic. Here, repairs are anticipated to commence following ground stabilisation. Additionally, plans are in place for further stabilisation near Nechtan Drive, along with necessary road repairs on The Glen.

Ongoing Community Support Initiatives

The Mining Remediation Authority continues to offer dedicated support to impacted households through designated contacts, account managers, and a local community liaison officer. Collaborative efforts among partners ensure that assistance remains coordinated and practical for those in need.

Moving forward, the authority pledges to handle this sensitive situation with care, clarity, and respect, ensuring that affected residents receive crucial information directly and have the opportunity to discuss their individual circumstances.
