HMS Bulwark Set for Brazilian Navy Transfer as UK Focuses on Future of Amphibious Vessels

End of an Era for HMS Bulwark

The Royal Navy has marked the conclusion of HMS Bulwark’s distinguished service, which spanned two decades. As one of the two Albion-class amphibious assault ships commissioned in 2005, HMS Bulwark has been pivotal in various operations worldwide. Her duties have included amphibious deployments, humanitarian missions, and collaborative exercises with international allies.

HMS Bulwark’s sister ship, HMS Albion, currently remains at HMNB Devonport, awaiting her eventual disposal. The transfer of HMS Bulwark comes on the heels of a significant maritime partnership agreement between the UK and the Netherlands, valued at £2.4 billion, which was established in July 2026. This agreement is set to facilitate the construction of a new fleet of amphibious transport vessels, which will replace the capabilities previously offered by the Albion class.

Investment in Future Capabilities

The forthcoming ships, designed to be built in UK shipyards in collaboration with Dutch industry, are anticipated to sustain hundreds of highly skilled jobs within the UK. With a length of 160 metres and a displacement of 15,000 tonnes, these vessels will possess the capability to transport troops, vehicles, and equipment— including drones—to any required location.

Lord Coaker, the Minister of State for Defence, commented on the legacy of HMS Bulwark, stating that she served both the nation and its allies with great honour over her lifespan. He expressed satisfaction that the ship will continue her journey in Brazilian service, alongside a long-standing defence partner. This new partnership with the Netherlands is seen as a significant advancement for the UK Armed Forces, providing modern and interoperable capabilities essential for future operations alongside allies.

Significant Contributions and Future Prospects

During her service, HMS Bulwark played a crucial role as the Fleet Flagship from 2011 to 2015 and was involved in numerous humanitarian efforts, including the civilian evacuation operations from Lebanon in 2006. She also contributed to maritime security during the Sailing Regatta at the London 2012 Olympics. As the Royal Navy transitions to a hybrid force, the future UK-Dutch amphibious fleet will have flight decks designed to support both current and future long-range drones and autonomous systems.

This initiative aligns with the broader objectives outlined in the Defence Investment Plan, which aims to integrate uncrewed technologies across the fleet. The programme is poised to be the backbone of a fortified UK-Netherlands amphibious force, with each nation expected to operate four vessels, thus enhancing shared capabilities that reinforce NATO’s northern and Atlantic flanks.
