Met Office Extends Partnership with Heathrow Airport for Enhanced Weather Services

Continuation of a Successful Partnership

The Met Office has successfully renewed its contract with Heathrow Airport, solidifying a collaborative relationship that has spanned 15 years. This partnership will allow the Met Office to maintain its role in delivering specialised meteorological services at the United Kingdom’s busiest airport.

Under the terms of this renewed five-year agreement, the Met Office will continue to provide expert meteorological support directly at Heathrow. This includes tailored forecasts and operational weather assistance, enabling the airport to effectively prepare for and respond to a variety of challenging weather conditions such as fog, snow, strong winds, heavy rainfall, and extreme temperatures.

This contract amalgamates commercial forecasting services with the Met Office’s existing regulated aviation weather services, which are provided on behalf of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). These services are integral to ensuring the safety and efficiency of the UK’s aviation sector.

Enhanced Meteorological Services

As part of this agreement, the Met Office will also maintain its meteorological observing services at Heathrow and its surrounding observation sites. This is particularly crucial for forecasting fog and addressing low visibility scenarios.

Additionally, the Met Office Aeronautical Visualisation Service (MAVIS) will be employed alongside operational meteorologist support. This integration will facilitate broader access to a variety of regulated aviation forecast tools for all personnel at the airport.

Beyond daily operations, the Met Office’s climate data and expertise will play a vital role in informing long-term planning and enhancing future resilience strategies for Heathrow Airport.

Expert Insights for Operational Efficiency

Steve Calder, Chief Customer Officer at the Met Office and Director of Government and Industry Relationships, emphasised the significance of weather forecasting for an airport of Heathrow’s scale. He stated: “Weather is more than a forecast for an airport like Heathrow. It is a critical input to operational decision-making. By working side-by-side with Heathrow’s teams, our meteorologists provide the insight and foresight needed to anticipate weather impacts, minimise disruption and maintain safe, efficient operations.”

Calder further asserted that this agreement is a continuation of a partnership that transforms top-tier weather science into operational reliability, ensuring millions of journeys are facilitated each month.

Commitment to Safety and Efficiency

Lauren Donohue, Aviation Business Manager at the Met Office, expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing collaboration, stating: “We’re thrilled to continue our work with Heathrow, and look forward to supporting the airport to be prepared, whatever the weather brings.”

Trevor Waldock, Head of Airside Operations at Heathrow, reiterated the importance of the Met Office’s role, remarking: “The Met Office has been a trusted Heathrow partner for fifteen years, playing a critical role in keeping the UK’s only hub airport operating safely. Their teams are on hand 365 days a year, providing specialist forecasting that enables our teams to plan with confidence and ensures passengers and cargo are kept on the move.”

Waldock expressed satisfaction in renewing this long-standing partnership, highlighting the mutual commitment to sustaining efficient and resilient operations at Heathrow Airport.

Comprehensive Meteorological Support

The Met Office team stationed at Heathrow offers customised meteorological advice directly within the Heathrow Airport Operations Centre. This dedicated team of embedded meteorologists is available 24/7, providing continuous support to key operations managers across various functions, including airside, landside, air traffic control, and airlines.

In its role within the aviation sector, the Met Office delivers a comprehensive range of services that assist airports, airlines, air traffic management organisations, and regulatory bodies throughout the UK. These services are instrumental in enabling aviation partners to mitigate the impacts of weather, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure safe air travel for all.
