A Shift Towards Public Ownership and Affordable Travel
The government’s commitment to fostering a more equitable economy is evident in its efforts to make essentials more affordable, including travel. This approach is foundational to the upcoming establishment of Great British Railways (GBR) next year, and the initial benefits of bringing rail companies back into public ownership are already being felt by passengers.
With rail fares frozen until March next year, an estimated £600 million will be saved for passengers. Furthermore, contactless ticketing has been expanded to over 100 additional stations, alongside improvements in overall service performance across the rail network.
Complementary Offers for Family Outings
In conjunction with the discounted train fares, children will be able to travel free on buses throughout August. Starting in January, single bus fares in England outside London will be capped at £2. These initiatives collectively aim to significantly reduce the costs associated with family days out, enabling parents to combine low-cost train travel with complimentary bus rides for their children.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has highlighted the concerns many families face regarding the cost of living and the feasibility of enjoying days out. The discounts on public train services aim to alleviate these worries, making it easier for families to cherish their time together.

Rail operators have curated a range of enticing offers for the summer, including:
- Children under 16 can travel on Southeastern services during off-peak hours for just £1.
- c2c and GTR (operating Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern, and Gatwick Express services) continue their popular “Kids for £2” initiative, allowing children to travel off-peak for only £2 return on weekends and during school holidays.
- Greater Anglia is also providing selected £2 tickets for children.
- LNER and Northern are offering discounted family tickets accommodating up to two adults and four children, with average savings reaching 77%.
- Families travelling from Birmingham to London can take advantage of a summer deal priced as low as £22 on WM Trains.
- On TransPennine Express services, younger passengers can engage with a complimentary ‘All Aboard’ educational activity book, filled with puzzles, games, and rail-themed learning content. Additionally, the operator has partnered with local attractions to provide rail customers with deals such as 2-for-1 tickets to Scarborough Castle and one-third off entry to the Edinburgh Dungeon and Legoland (Manchester).
- Not only families benefit; c2c has introduced a flat £15 adult off-peak return fare from any c2c station in the London Travelcard area to Southend, valid from 21 July to 31 August, making beach trips more affordable.
