Streamlining the Registration Process for Immigration Advisers
The Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) has announced a significant overhaul of its application process for advisers and organisations, aiming to simplify the registration journey, minimise delays, and enhance the efficiency of application processing. This initiative follows recent updates to the competence assessment framework, which includes revised syllabuses, a new assessment platform, and an increase in the frequency of assessment opportunities.
Revised Requirements for Application Submissions
Under the amended guidelines, organisations seeking initial or continued registration must now disclose the details of all advisers associated with them. Previously, if an adviser needed to complete a competence assessment, the registration process could not advance until they had successfully passed this assessment. This often led to delays as advisers were required to reschedule and retake assessments before their applications could progress.
With the new process, advisers will be mandated to complete and pass their competence assessments prior to being included in an organisation’s application. This adjustment is expected to eliminate a frequent source of delay and provide applicants and organisations with greater certainty at an earlier stage of the application process.
Improved Information Gathering at the Application Stage
The IAA is also revising the application journey to ensure that all necessary information is collected at the moment of submission. Currently, some details may be requested after an application has been lodged, which can hinder progress as additional information is sought.
The updated process is designed to capture essential information, such as employment history and right to work details, from the outset. This proactive approach will reduce the need for follow-up inquiries, leading to a more efficient processing of applications. By addressing common obstacles and gathering required information upfront, applications can progress through the system more smoothly.
Moreover, these changes will allow IAA staff to allocate less time to resolving incomplete applications and more time to assessing submissions and assisting applicants effectively.
Timeline for Implementation and Temporary Application Closure
The newly revised application process is set to be rolled out on 17 November 2026. In the interim, the online competence assessment will remain temporarily suspended while the new arrangements are established. The IAA has indicated that assessments are anticipated to recommence in November 2026, contingent upon the finalisation of necessary preparations and dependencies. Given the volume of applications already received and the expected demand upon the reopening of assessments, candidates should be prepared for potential delays during this transitional phase. Further updates and confirmed assessment dates will be published on the IAA’s website as they become available.
Important Notes on Application Procedures
Effective immediately, all types of applications have been paused to facilitate the implementation of these changes. During this period, no new applications will be accepted, and all applicants must adhere to the revised process once it is launched.
From 17 November 2026 onwards:
- All new applicants will be required to follow the updated application process.
- Individuals will need to apply for a competence assessment initially.
- Those required to complete a competence assessment must pass it before being added to an organisation’s application or applying to establish their own organisation.
Applications that are already in the system before the transition will be processed under the previous guidelines. Furthermore, individuals exempt from taking a competence assessment will still have the opportunity to join an IAA-regulated organisation through an established exemption process.
Additional information regarding the transition arrangements, along with updated guidance and support materials, will be made available ahead of the implementation date.
