Significant Funding for Rape Crisis Services
In a pivotal move to enhance support for victims of sexual violence, the Ministry of Justice has announced a substantial allocation of £8.7 million to Rape Crisis England & Wales. This funding will enable the continuation of their crucial Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line, which offers round-the-clock assistance for those affected by such crimes.
The helpline, which is free to use, provides confidential emotional support to victims and survivors aged 16 and over, ensuring that they have access to trauma-informed assistance at any hour. Since its inception in 2022, the service has successfully received over 200,000 calls and 75,000 webchats, demonstrating its vital role in the community.
Government Commitment to Victim Support
This funding underscores the Government’s dedication to combating the abhorrent crimes of sexual violence and ensuring that victims receive the help they need in a timely manner. Alex Davies-Jones, Minister for Victims and Violence Against Women and Girls, expressed her concern for those impacted by these heinous acts. She emphasised the importance of the Rape Crisis helpline, stating that it serves as a crucial resource for survivors seeking support and guidance.
Davies-Jones reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the dedicated team behind the helpline, acknowledging their tireless work in providing a safe space for survivors to share their experiences and seek assistance.
Continued Support and Expansion of Services
Ciara Bergman, the Chief Executive Officer of Rape Crisis England & Wales, shared her enthusiasm for the ongoing provision of the 24/7 support line. She highlighted the impressive impact of the service and the commitment of the staff and volunteers who work diligently to ensure that survivors have access to high-quality, trusted support.
As part of the expansion of services, helpline specialists will also be equipped to guide survivor-victims towards long-term support options, regardless of whether they have reported the crime. The new funding will facilitate the introduction of British Sign Language interpretation and enhance dedicated support for individuals with diverse needs.
Strengthening Legal Protections for Victims
In tandem with the funding announcement, the Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor have introduced measures that exclude rape and specific child sexual offences from forthcoming changes to prison sentencing. This decision aims to safeguard the public from dangerous offenders and maintain stringent penalties for those convicted of such serious crimes.
Moreover, the Government is investing over half a billion pounds into essential support services to assist victims and witnesses throughout the justice process. This substantial £550 million investment over the next three years will enhance access to practical and emotional support, including counselling and guidance for individuals attending court.

The 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line remains available for anyone aged 16 and over in England and Wales who has experienced rape, child sexual abuse, sexual assault, sexual harassment, or any other form of sexual violence at any point in their lives. The new grant funding is set to run from 1 October 2026 until 30 September 2029, ensuring the continuity of this essential service for years to come.
