Significant Progress in Employment Support for Disabled Individuals
Over 25,000 individuals with disabilities or health-related challenges are benefitting from the tailored assistance provided by the Connect to Work programme, with recent statistics confirming its effectiveness in achieving its objectives. To date, 4,100 participants have successfully entered employment through the programme’s support, coinciding with the full implementation of services across various regions and the expansion of existing initiatives.
The programme aims to assist approximately 300,000 individuals by the end of the decade as part of the Government’s initiative to eliminate barriers to employment and transition from a welfare-oriented framework to a more work-focused system. Launched last year, Connect to Work operates throughout England and Wales, empowering local communities to design support mechanisms that cater specifically to their needs, backed by an impressive £1 billion in Government funding during this parliamentary term.
Personalised Support Tailored to Individual Needs
Participants, who are not required to be on benefits, receive intensive, one-on-one guidance from specialised advisers. These advisers meet participants in various settings, including GP surgeries, local cafés, parks, or community hubs, ensuring convenience and comfort for the individual.
The latest data, released recently, indicates that the programme is on track to support 300,000 individuals by the close of the decade, with delivery efforts increasing following the comprehensive rollout across all regions by July 2026. Between April 2025 and June 2026, 25,000 individuals enrolled in the programme, a significant increase compared to 14,000 from the previous year. Notably, 4,100 out-of-work participants found employment, more than doubling the figure from earlier reports. Furthermore, over a quarter of those receiving support were aged between 16 and 24, highlighting the programme’s focus on younger adults.

This initiative aligns with the Government’s commitment to stimulate economic growth in every community and to reform the welfare system it inherited, which currently sees 2.7 million individuals unemployed due to health-related issues. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden emphasised the long-standing neglect faced by disabled individuals and those with health conditions, stating that Connect to Work is addressing these deficiencies by offering supportive, community-driven solutions.
McFadden noted, “For too long, disabled people and those with health conditions have been denied the support they needed to work – written off by a system that left them behind. Connect to Work is changing that. It’s proof that when we trust local areas to design support around their own communities, it works.” The latest figures illustrate the programme’s tangible benefits, with a growing number of individuals finding employment and driving local economic growth.
Comprehensive Support Strategies
Connect to Work Advisers focus on understanding each participant’s unique health conditions and the barriers they face, collaborating with them to eliminate obstacles to employment. Their comprehensive approach includes:
- Matching individuals with jobs that align with their skills and personal circumstances.
- Providing practical skills support such as CV writing to enhance employability.
- Engaging directly with employers to facilitate the recruitment and retention of disabled workers.
- Offering continued assistance once participants secure employment to ensure they thrive in their roles.
One participant, Nick, shared his experience, stating, “I’ve been out of work for nearly 14 years due to mental health issues. The death of my father, followed by a relationship breakdown, sent me into a downward spiral, and I felt isolated. I knew something had to change. With the help of my Employment Specialist, Michelle, I have already achieved so much in just six weeks. I have passed my first exam, have another coming up, and have applied for a job. Onwards and upwards!”
Empowering Local Communities Through Devolution
Connect to Work exemplifies the principle of devolution, with local authorities—from mayoral strategic partnerships to county and district councils—tailoring the programme’s delivery to suit their specific communities rather than adhering to a uniform model. Councillor Peter Harris, Leader of Essex County Council, praised the programme’s impact, stating, “We are proud to be one of the country’s leading Connect to Work delivery areas. The programme is making a real difference across Essex, helping residents overcome barriers and move into sustainable employment.” He further noted that the success of the programme illustrates the effectiveness of localised support, which will be crucial as Essex progresses towards further devolution.
Connect to Work is an integral component of the Government’s broader £3.5 billion employment support initiative, which aims to provide personalised health and employment assistance to countless individuals with disabilities and health conditions, facilitating their transition closer to the workforce.
Wider Initiatives Supporting Employment Opportunities
This extensive support package includes the national rollout of WorkWell, with £259 million allocated to aid up to 250,000 individuals with health issues in staying in or returning to work. Furthermore, the Government has deployed 1,000 Pathways to Work advisers who have successfully assisted hundreds of thousands previously overlooked by prior administrations.
In addition, £2.5 billion is being invested in a youth employment initiative designed to support nearly one million young individuals, offering 500,000 opportunities for earning or learning over a three-year period, thereby enhancing employment prospects across various regions.
Monitoring Progress and Future Developments
Official statistics for the Connect to Work programme are available on GOV.UK and are published quarterly. The data encompasses activities from April 2025 through to June 2026 across England and Wales, during which the programme underwent rolling implementation and expansion.
The published figures reflect the activities of the 46 Connect to Work delivery areas that were operational by the end of June 2026, although only 28 have been providing data for six months or longer. Notably, the Greater Manchester Mayoral Strategic Authority is not included in the statistical releases, as they are using their Connect to Work funding for a pilot project.
The total funding allocated to local areas for Connect to Work stands at £1.2 billion, with £1.1 billion designated for England and £64.1 million for Wales. This programme operates across 48 delivery areas, each contributing to the overarching goal of enhancing employment opportunities for individuals facing significant barriers.
