Free Rail Travel for Bereaved Military Families This Remembrance Weekend
This upcoming Remembrance weekend, taking place on 7th and 8th November 2026, will see hundreds of bereaved military family members able to travel by train at no cost. This initiative aims to facilitate attendance at memorial services and commemorative events, allowing families to honour their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Armed Forces.
For the first time, one next of kin of each service member who has died in the line of duty will be entitled to free travel on National Rail services during this poignant weekend. This new provision builds upon the existing free travel scheme available for current personnel and veterans, alleviating the financial burden on families and encouraging their participation in remembrance activities.
Eligible family members interested in this offer have until 16th October to apply for complimentary tickets through the Defence Medical Welfare Service. This initiative is particularly aimed at ensuring that the cost of travel does not hinder bereaved families from attending the nation’s tribute to those who served.
Government Officials Highlight the Importance of Remembrance
Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, emphasised the significance of the Remembrance weekend as a time for the nation to unite in honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. He stated that bereaved families are central to these commemorations, and it is essential that financial constraints do not prevent them from paying tribute to their loved ones.
Minister for Veterans and People, Calvin Bailey, echoed these sentiments, describing Remembrance as a deeply personal occasion for families. He highlighted the importance of recognising the sacrifices made by service members while ensuring that their families can come together to honour their memories without facing financial barriers.
A Personal Perspective on the Initiative
Mikki Brett, who lost her husband Chief Petty Officer Stuart Brett, recently expressed her gratitude for this initiative. Stuart served in the Weapons Engineering branch of the Royal Navy and passed away while in service in April 2023. Mikki is among those who will directly benefit from the free travel offer, as she has already registered to attend the commemorative event at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.
In her discussion with Minister Calvin Bailey, Mikki noted the importance of recognising the sacrifices made by bereaved families and welcomed the support provided through this new travel initiative.
Industry Support for Remembrance Initiatives
Ola Ogun, Co-CEO of the Rail Delivery Group, remarked on the long-standing connection between railways and remembrance commemorations, recognising the vital role the industry has played during wartime. This year, the rail sector is particularly proud to extend its support by offering free travel not only to serving personnel and veterans but also to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives in service.
Ola noted that this gesture acknowledges the sacrifices made by service members as well as the families who continue to honour their legacy and memory.
Support from Charitable Organisations
SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has expressed its approval of the Department for Transport’s decision to extend free travel to bereaved military families during the Remembrance weekend. A spokesperson for the charity highlighted that this change allows those who have endured the loss of loved ones in service to attend remembrance events without the burden of financial constraints.
This thoughtful initiative stands as a meaningful tribute to the sacrifices made by military families, ensuring they can join the nation in remembrance and reflection during this significant time.
