Weather Conditions Shifting Towards Autumn
This week, the UK is set to experience a pronounced transition into autumnal weather as low pressure systems dominate the forecast. Expect a series of wet and windy conditions, particularly highlighted by a Yellow weather warning for strong winds, which has been announced for Thursday night and Friday across southern regions of the country.
On Monday, showers in the southwestern parts of England and southern Wales are predicted to clear towards the west. However, additional showers are likely to move northwards, impacting northern England and extending into southern Scotland. In contrast, the remainder of the UK can anticipate a mix of sunny intervals and predominantly dry conditions.
As the night progresses into Tuesday, rain is expected to spread northwards, affecting a significant portion of the UK. Northern Ireland and the southwestern region of England are forecasted to enjoy a brighter and drier day. By the evening, a new weather front will approach from the west, bringing heavier rainfall that will gradually move eastward across the country on Wednesday.
Forecast of Strong Winds and Heavy Rain
As Thursday arrives, focus shifts to an evolving area of low pressure. While uncertainties remain regarding its intensity and exact trajectory, there is potential for the emergence of strong winds and heavy rainfall. The Yellow weather warning for wind underscores the likelihood of gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph, with exposed coastal areas possibly experiencing gusts up to 70 mph.
Tom Crabtree, Deputy Chief Forecaster, commented on the situation: “Our attention is particularly drawn to the potential development of a deep area of low pressure that could traverse the UK overnight on Thursday and into Friday. This system may generate some significant winds, although the precise locations of the strongest gusts will depend on the low’s position. At this time, it is advisable for the public to stay informed and prepare for unsettled weather as the week draws to a close.”
As Friday unfolds, the UK is expected to endure a day characterised by widespread wet and windy conditions, with the low pressure system projected to move into the North Sea by the afternoon. This shift will usher in colder air across the UK, particularly noticeable during the night into Saturday, before the next Atlantic front arrives to bring milder temperatures and additional rain.
