Mexican Students Create Innovative Smart Gloves for Sign Language Translation

The Challenge of Communication for the Hearing Impaired in Mexico

According to official statistics, approximately 1.35 million individuals in Mexico live with hearing impairments. Concurrently, the most recent census from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicates that over 945,000 Mexicans experience challenges in verbal communication. In this context, Mexican Sign Language (LSM) serves as the primary mode of expression for many of these individuals. Alarmingly, it is estimated that only around 100,000 people are proficient in this language.

This situation inherently leads to a form of discrimination and exclusion. How can a deaf person convey their basic needs, assert their rights, or express their opinions when only a small segment of the population is equipped to understand their mode of communication? This pressing issue motivated a group of students from the University of Sonora and the Monterrey Institute of Technology, Sonora Norte campus, to create an innovative prototype of gloves capable of translating LSM into audio and text in real-time, utilising artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Innovative Solutions from Aspiring Engineers

The prototype was showcased by César Luna, César Castillo, Mario Chaidez, and Emiliano Acuña, all students of Mechatronics Engineering and Computational Technologies. They unveiled their invention during the Smart City Hackathon 2026, an intensive innovation marathon requiring multidisciplinary teams to develop practical solutions for urban challenges and enhance quality of life within a maximum timeframe of 36 hours.

After receiving expert mentoring, the young inventors designed gloves equipped with flexible sensors fitted to the user’s fingers, accelerometers, and cost-effective circuit boards. Together, these components capture and record hand movements. This data is transmitted via Bluetooth to an electronic device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer, where an AI system interprets the signals and converts them into text and audio outputs displayed on screens or through speakers.

Transformative Impact on Communication

The prototype not only promises to enhance communication for millions of deaf individuals across the country but also led to the creation of an initiative called Señas a Voces Academy. This digital platform offers interactive lessons and personalised tracking to facilitate the learning of LSM, supported by cutting-edge technologies.

The preliminary version of the innovative gloves has received positive feedback from users. On the official website of the initiative, María González, a mother of a student with hearing impairment, shared her experience: “Thanks to Señas a Voces, my daughter can communicate with her teacher without barriers. The technology behind the glove is extraordinary.” Similarly, Carlos Hernández, a deaf engineer, remarked, “The translation glove has transformed my professional life. I can now participate in work meetings without the need for an interpreter.”

The innovation introduced by these Sonoran students not only highlights the exceptional talent available in Mexico for harnessing cutting-edge technology to address societal issues but also reflects how new generations are eager to leverage these advancements to improve the lives of millions who face inequality. Their commitment to dismantling historically entrenched cultural barriers is underscored by César Castillo’s insight: “What prevents us from hearing the voices of those with hearing and speech disabilities is not just their condition, but also indifference. With this project, we aim to break down that barrier.”
