Strengthening UNSMIL’s Role in Promoting a Libyan-Led Political Process: UK Statement at the UN Security Council

UK Welcomes Renewal of UNSMIL Mandate

The United Kingdom has expressed its approval for the adoption of resolution 2835, which extends the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for an additional year. This renewal is seen as a pivotal step in bolstering the mission’s capacity to facilitate a political process that is both led and owned by the Libyan people.

The UK delegation extends its gratitude to the members of the Council for their constructive engagement during the negotiations leading to this resolution. The renewed mandate will empower Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Tetteh to continue her efforts in advancing the roadmap aimed at stabilising Libya.

Encouraging Commitment to Political Agreements

This resolution calls upon Libyan factions to honour their commitments as outlined in the ‘Smaller Convening’ agreement. This vital step is expected to pave the way for free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections within the next 24 months, a critical milestone in Libya’s democratic journey.

Moreover, the resolution seeks to foster the reunification of Libya’s various institutions, which include the judicial, military, and security sectors. This effort aims to create a more cohesive governance structure that can effectively respond to the needs of the Libyan populace.

Support for Establishing a Unified Executive Authority

By providing a solid framework for UNSMIL’s support, the resolution underscores the necessity for Libyan parties to work towards establishing a single executive authority. It sends a clear message that any actions aimed at undermining this endeavour will not be tolerated.

Additionally, the resolution acknowledges the significance of UNSMIL’s role in promoting human rights and the rule of law. It encourages the mission to actively advocate for the full, equal, and meaningful participation of women in the political landscape, ensuring their voices are heard and valued in the ongoing processes.

Call for Commitment from Libyan Parties

In addressing the Council, the UK reaffirmed its unwavering support for UNSMIL and the efforts of SRSG Tetteh in advancing the political process in Libya. The message is clear: all parties involved must honour the commitments they have made to ensure that the Libyan people are provided with the democratic choices, economic opportunities, and security they seek.
