Significant Investment for Safe Decommissioning
A contract valued at up to £190 million has been awarded to expedite the safe decommissioning of the Dungeness A site, aiming to mitigate long-term national risks while bolstering British industry, developing local skills, and creating economic opportunities for surrounding communities.
The ambitious project encompasses the removal of eight boiler units, each weighing approximately 800 tonnes, alongside the associated plant and infrastructure. This initiative follows four years of preparatory work aimed at readying the site for this intricate phase of decommissioning.
Historic Milestones in Dungeness A’s Journey
The first boiler at Dungeness A was installed on-site in 1962, marking the beginning of a significant chapter in the UK’s energy history. Rob Fletcher, Chief Executive Officer of NRS, has expressed enthusiasm for this pivotal project, describing it as a notable engineering challenge. He emphasised the importance of collaborating closely with Aureos, the supply chain, and regulatory bodies to explore innovative methods that align with the Nuclear Regulatory Review’s recommendations. This approach aims to ensure safe decommissioning while delivering value to taxpayers and maintaining a steadfast commitment to safety standards.
The boilers will be removed using a specialised jack and slide system, which allows for the careful and efficient dismantling of some of the largest remaining structures at the station. The successful removal of these components will signify tangible progress in the transformation of the site and the reduction of future maintenance obligations.
Acknowledging Team Efforts and Planning
Vicki Baxter, Senior Project Manager, highlighted the achievement of reaching this milestone, attributing it to exceptional teamwork, meticulous planning, and effective collaboration throughout the demolition and site preparation phases.
Aureos was chosen through a rigorous procurement process that evaluated various factors, including technical expertise, project reliability, innovation, social value, and cost-effectiveness.
Dave Evans, Site Director at Dungeness A, remarked on the significance of this contract, noting it represents a major phase in the decommissioning process. He underscored that this achievement is the culmination of extensive planning and preparation, bringing the project closer to its ultimate decommissioning goals.
Community Engagement and Lasting Impact
Darren James, Chief Executive Officer of Aureos, expressed his delight at receiving the contract, particularly after a procurement process that prioritised innovative solutions. He looks forward to collaborating with NRS to realise the project’s objectives, recognising its critical importance not only for the Dungeness A site but also for the surrounding community.
The supplier is committed to engaging with local communities and stakeholders throughout the project’s duration. This includes collaboration with schools, universities, community organisations, and local businesses. Planned activities will encompass engagement events, opportunities for local supply chains, volunteering initiatives, and regular updates to ensure the project provides enduring benefits to the region.
Once completed, the project is expected to remove approximately one-third of Dungeness A’s above-ground structures, significantly reducing the site’s footprint and long-term maintenance needs. This progress will support NRS in fulfilling its decommissioning mission and ultimately prepare the land for future beneficial use.
