Collaborative Efforts for Safe Access on Salisbury Plain
The department has joined forces with The Trail Riders Fellowship (TRF) to enhance safe access to the Salisbury Plain Training Area (SPTA), a premier military training ground in the UK. This partnership aims to highlight the significance of responsible public access while safeguarding military operations and environmental conservation.
The initiative features a series of engaging social media videos that underscore the critical balance between military training, ecological preservation, and public safety. These videos aim to educate viewers on the essential role that Salisbury Plain plays as a military training estate, illustrating the scale, intensity, and complexity of activities required for preparing Armed Forces personnel for various operations.
Moreover, the campaign addresses the repercussions of public interruptions on military training and readiness. It seeks to raise awareness about how disruptions can lead to delays, increased costs, and, in some cases, the omission of crucial training exercises.
Responsible Engagement with the Training Area
Through this collaboration, the TRF exemplifies how members of the public can responsibly access areas within the SPTA. The organisation highlights the importance of safety awareness, compliance with regulations, and personal accountability while engaging with the training area.
Furthermore, the videos also draw attention to the significant ecological importance of Salisbury Plain Training Area. The region is home to various protected habitats and wildlife that suffer from the adverse effects of irresponsible access, often leading to irreversible damage to delicate flora and fauna.
Lt Col Jamie Powell, Senior Training Safety Officer at SPTA, emphasised the critical function of the training area in preparing Armed Forces for deployment. He noted that every interruption during training not only causes delays and additional costs but may also result in essential training being overlooked.
Commitment to Safety and Responsibility
Powell expressed that by collaborating with responsible user groups like the Trail Riders Fellowship, the military can demonstrate that safe and responsible public access is achievable while respecting the land’s primary military purpose. The partnership aims to foster a mutual understanding between military operations and recreational activities.
Graeme Collins, Chair of the Trail Riders Fellowship, reiterated the importance of maintaining access to the Salisbury Plain Training Area while respecting its military designation. He affirmed the fellowship’s commitment to supporting this initiative and promoting the responsible use of the training estate.
The public is urged to adhere to a set of guidelines when accessing the SPTA to ensure safety for all. These guidelines include:
- Following all signs and safety information, including red flags, and complying with instructions from military safety personnel.
- Checking firing times and local access information online prior to a visit.
- Sticking to public rights of way and avoiding restricted areas.
- Keeping dogs under control and in sight, while ensuring that owners clean up after them.
- Refraining from touching any military debris and reporting it for safe removal.
By fostering a culture of responsibility and awareness, this campaign aims to ensure that both military training needs and public enjoyment of the area can coexist harmoniously.
